A Sharp, a Flat, and Ranking 6 Seasons of Men!
#194 - 1--Jlynne--A Sharp, a Flat, and Ranking 6 Seasons of Men!--2007-06-13 13:36:20
#Male talent was not abounding this season, but did any of the guys have what it takes to join the ranks of Clay or Chris? (Daughtry, that is.) - I use three key ingredients to grade vocals, Technique, Range, and Tone. I've found that some people bug my during a season and that once time goes by, I can let go of my pettiness and reward folks like Anthony and Constantine their rightful spots.
Technique- This could also be called "control." A singer could have glory notes for days, and a very nice tone, but without technique there is no breath control and a singer will go off pitch. There also won't be as much styalization, such as creative additions to a song to make it their own, or interesting runs. Compare Anwar's "Wonderful World" with say, Sanjaya's "Steppin' Out With My Baby," or Elliott's "Knocks Me off my Feet" to Sanjaya's. Okay, I promise that's the last time I pick on Sanjaya, I think he's great anyway, just not vocally.
Range- For the most part, with this show, we're speaking of a belting range. The best way I can explain this through typing is the loud notes up high that give you goosebumps, not the softer falsetto notes.
Tone- It's the thing that makes our voices our voices. Yes, you can sing with different tones, but your core vocal tone is still present. Chris Richardson claimed to sing nasal as a vocal technique, I beg to differ, I just found his overall tone to be rather nasally. George Huf had a very unique tone, very rough and soulful. Ruben's tone was velvetty, Clay's tone was piercingly clear, and so on and so forth.
