Top 3 Sing and I don’t want to miss a thing.
#436 - 1--ed--Top 3 Sing and I don’t want to miss a thing.--2008-05-13 23:43:25
#Judges,Contestants,Producers; What do they have in common? They picked the songs that made the top three shine. - Top 3 night is always a great show. I think of Katherine McPhee’s “Over the Rainbow”, Clay’s “Mack the Knife” Kelly’s “Without You” Kim Locke’s “Inseparable” Diana’s “Don’t Cry Out Loud” Bo’s “In a Dream” Carrie’s “Crying”. Look at my short list and understand why top 3 is “Must see TV”. Tonight was no different. I do wish we could have had my favorite contestant of season 7 here but it was still good none the less. And so here goes….
Judge’s Choice:
David Archuleta: “And So It Goes”
And how goes it? It went great. I think this is one of the best David A. performances of the season. And for sure it was better than Carmen’s version of the same song season 2. This was a great pure vocal. This was a great way to start off the night. I don’t think the curse of the first is going to snatch David from the show next week.
Grade A+
Syesha Mercado: “If I Ain’t Got You”
I am no fan of this song but Syesha did it justice. She looked her ravishing self and that’s worth a few points don’t you think? One of Syesha’s best in the last few weeks. But having to follow the performance David just gave made it pale a bit in comparison. But still good enough to get a good grade from me.
Grade A
David Cook: “First Time Ever I Saw Your Face”
What an odd pick. How can this work? Damn well thank you! This kind of reminds me when Simon picked “Over the Rainbow” for Kat. The exception being I had a notion Kat would do very well with this. I wasn’t so sure about David. Now I am. Here comes a bit of Idol blasphemy. I think David is better than Chris.
Grade A+
Idol Choices:
David Archuleta: “With You”
Likely the only song of Chris Brown’s I like except “No Air”. I’m kind of with the judges here. It was not my favorite David sing fest. It looked a little awkward. Still David didn’t forget the words or fall off the stage or get groped by the mosh pit during this. So I guess it was a success.
Grade B+
Syesha Mercado: “Fever”
Paris Bennett ripped this a new one season 5. Will Syesha match up? I loved it. In fact I am not on the boat with anyone else here. I liked this as good as her first. I think unlike what Paula said, Syesha is telling us exactly who she is with this rendition. Broadway/movies/TV. And I think she will be more successful than any other Idol in that venue.
Grade A
David Cook: “Dare You To Move”
We witness a rare moment here with David. He actually (I have to agree with the dawg) he went off pitch. Whereas Simon once proclaimed David would be lost without his guitar, this time I think he was more lost with it. It was a song choice we would expect him to excel at but it just didn’t get going til it was time to get gone. Still not bad.
Grade B
Producer’s Choices:
David Archuleta: “Longer”
I love this song and thought David would do a great job. Not as good as his first but better than the 2
nd. I wonder if the absence of his father mad a difference. I agree with Simon that David did enough to make the final.
Grade A-
Syesha Mercado: “Hit me Up”
Another song I don’t dig. But I liked Syesha doing it. The song that is. She again showed who she wants to be; An on stage performer in front of a live audience. Vocally it was very good as much of a vocal one could do with this melodically challenged song.
Grade A-
David Cook: “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing”
Except for a couple notes in the beginning, I don’t think we did. When I heard this song choice I thought it would be great and I was not mistaken. I want to hear the whole version of this. This will be my next David Cook iTunes download. And hey look who’s in the audience. None other than the person who wrote that song, Diane Warren. She has to be proud. And so is David’s mother. Great way to end the night and not let the pimp spot go to waste.
Grade A+
There is no doubt in my mind who will be in the top 2 next week. In fact I don’t think there is much doubt as to who will be the last one standing. I had a poll last article about Syesha’s chances of making the top 2. I will repeat that poll now that we have heard everyone sing and see if the results stay the same or change.
I loved the show tonight and only wish Carly would have been singing tonight instead of Syesha. Not that I don’t like Syesha or I don’t think she is good, it’s just that I believe this would have been a much better night with Carly singing. And I bet Simon would have picked her song.
Even if my favorites didn’t make it this far I still say this is the most talented season ever. While I don’t think we have the best 3 left these 3 could not only hold their own in any season, they may have won if they were in the right season. Can that be said about any other season top 3?
And might I say that Paula was unusually conscious tonight. She looked normal and sounded even more normal. She made sense and I found myself listening to her. How weird is that?
Is it Finale Tuesday yet?
