A Sharp, a Flat, and the Tragically Uninspiring Final 3
#437 - 1--Jlynne--A Sharp, a Flat, and the Tragically Uninspiring Final 3--2008-05-14 02:02:09
#This final 3 night was BS. The song choices by everyone were weak, boring, atrocious, and/or abominable. Talk about disheartening. There was literally one great performance, one good performance, and everything else was utterly forgettable. Simon’s choice provided us with the ONE great performance of the night.
- To say I’m angry and disappointed is an understatement. I’m writing articles now for the best top performances from each final week including EVERY season. I can safely say that when I get to the Top 3 performances, none of these will make the cut against the likes of Kelly’s “Without You,” Diana’s “Don’t Cry Out Loud,” or Carrie’s “Crying.” Were you as disappointed as I was?
On to the performances......
(1) David Archuleta
“And so it Goes” (Song Choice grade: 8/10)
Vocals: He pulled out the acapella! Well, there was an intro, so not totally coming in acapella, but it had a nice, haunting effect. The rest was pretty. I thought some of the runs were a little overdone, but an overall great performance.
Performance: I do wish him playing the piano was involved, but he had a strong performance and vocal and seemed much more comfortable. I agree with Simon, no surprises, but it did end up better than I expected.
Verdict: 7/10
“With You” (Song Choice grade: 5/10 *and I love this song)
Vocals: It wasn’t terrible, it wasn’t great. Lyric problems. Again. Shocking, nope. Unfortunately, he added some of his usual runs into it, and I think it wasn’t appropriate to the song. He shmaltzed it up.
Performance: He was bopping around, a little like Elliott Yamin’s manic moves on “I Don’t Wanna Be,” but with worse vocals. I don’t know. I think if this had been David’s first performance he wouldn’t be here right now. I actually started laughing. And no David, it isn’t because you are white, but good way to stereotypes entire ethnicities.
Verdict: 5/10
“Longer” (Song Choice grade: 0/10)
Vocals: This is the absolute worst song I’ve ever heard in my whole life. Absolutely, positively lame elevator music. It literally makes me nauseous. It makes me want to hide in a corner and rock back and forth. Anyway, it’s a nice vocal or whatever, but because of the sorriest song choice ever, it’s one of the most forgettable performances ever. And he never whipped out the piano tonight. I totally said the 90 year old thing Simon said the other day.
Performance: He sat and he sang.
Verdict: 6/10
TOTAL: 18/30
(2) Syesha Mercado
“If I Aint Got You” (Song Choice Grade: 4/10)
Vocals: Definitely the best this song has EVER been done on this show. Better than Alicia’s version, of course, she’s got a better range, and a clearer belt. She had some amazing runs, and I didn’t feel like it was as overdone at David’s. I loved the last bits in her head voice. It was great!
Performance: I thought it was a lovely, classy performance. She looked gorgeous.
Verdict: 8/10
“Fever” (Song Choice Grade: 4/10)
Vocals: It was a solid vocal, and I loved that she did a subtle version, and her head voice is really gorgeous. I loved the final run A LOT. But all in all, I was disappointed.
Performance: I totally agree with Paula and Simon. This didn’t show us the wow of Syesha, and it didn’t show what a legitimate artist she could be on the radio tomorrow. The performance didn’t sell the way I think she thought it would. The chair, which was ruined by Ryan telling us all about it before it happening, and then shooing her to immediately begin. It’s really awkward how they are having them all start immediately after weird little interviews. I don’t like it. I just thought this performance didn’t work as well as it could, or as well as she meant it to.
Verdict: 6/10
“Hit Me Up” (Song Choice Grade: 3/10)
Vocals: Huh... I have never heard this song in my whole life. There were some parts that were definitely flat. Like, wtf, this is from the “Happy Feet” soundtrack? Of all the songs in the world, THIS is the best they could come up with? It is just beyond me. She had a nice run in the middle, and she did what she could with it, but it is abominable that this is the song they chose.
Performance: She really sold it best she could. I just....yeah....
Verdict: 6/10
TOTAL: 20/30
(3) David Cook
“The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” (Song Choice Grade: 9/10)
Vocals: It started really fast, and I thought the first couple moments were a little shaky, but this is by far my favorite version of this song EVER done. He did some amazing things with it. His falsetto is all kinds of flawless. It’s the most beautiful, consistent falsetto we’ve ever had in this show. Ever. I loved the ending. Loved it.
Performance: It was touching and he really sold it. He’s definitely back. He really made me enjoy a vocal and a performance of a sung that usually bores the crap out of me.
Verdict: 9/10
“Dare you to Move” (Song Choice Grade: 5/10)
Vocals: Wow. That was bad. Wow. That was his worst vocal ever. Flatty McFlattness.
Performance: Holy awkward arrangement. It felt even worse than “Baba O’Riley” smashed together. Yipes.
Verdict: 4/10
“I Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing” (Song Choice Grade: 5/10)
Vocals: Okay, so this was much better than the Switchfoot song, but it still had a couple wayward moments. It was pretty cool with the orchestra and all, but.....I completely disagree that this is one of the best songs ever written. I love Aerosmith, and I even really like this song, but if you want to pick a great Aerosmith song, this wasn’t the one. Thanks for 3 driveling song choices producers.
Performance: It was good.
Verdict: 7/10
TOTAL: 20/30
David C & Syesha are tied. It doesn’t matter though. Syesha is going home, and for once she deserves it.
