Please No, Not Just Yet

#444 - 1--Idolista--Please No, Not Just Yet--2008-05-19 00:00:00

#Finale time already? Didn't we just start this crazy merry-go-round? - Every season, about four weeks before the finale, I think to myself “I can’t WAIT until this season is over”. Then when it suddenly just about is, I realize I’m not done with it yet. I’m not ready to give up the best part-time unpaid gig a writer/fan could have. I’m not ready to have Tuesday and Wednesday evenings free and have to find something to do with myself for those extra two evenings a week. But most of all, I’m not ready to stop being passionate about something.

In Idolista world, there are two things that excite my passion – Idol and football. It’s a long, cold hiatus between mid-May and mid-August when NCAA and NFL football starts cranking away again. Sure, I know the world keeps moving along and life continues uninterrupted for the majority of mankind, but for me it’s as though the bottom drops out (temporarily) of my world.

So here I am, the Monday before the finale, digging in my heels and refusing to let it end. Besides, we already know the outcome – David will win. And that applies to either of the Davids, whether confetti rains down on one’s head or not. At this point in the game, with the massive fan bases both of these contestants have mustered, there is little doubt that both will make records under Idol’s watchful wing. And more than likely both will be successful, although their respective audiences will differ.

My one hope, as I await the finale, is that at least one of these young men will want the Idol title badly enough to turn in some fabulous musical performances on Tuesday. I’m still feeling cheated by last week’s largely ‘phoned in’ performances. I want to see risks taken (and rewarded), I want to see lyrics connected to, experiences called upon and emotions awakened. I want these two fellows to play like champions in this final battle. I want to be torn as I ponder who to place my vote for. I want to be partisan, I want to be a fan, and I want it NOT to be a foregone conclusion. (Let’s face it, the moment we heard the winner’s song last year, we knew it wouldn’t be Blake on that stage singing it.)

For all intents and purposes, this should be a battle among equal, yet different, competitors. And the win will go to the contestant with the most heart. America notices when you’re trying your ultimate best and they tend to reward that. Both of the Davids need to bring their A games tomorrow. If they do, this could be one of the best finales ever. If they don’t, David will still win, but it won’t matter quite as much to me.

I want to thank all of you who’ve read my articles again this season – whether you’ve agreed or disagreed, I’ve enjoyed your interest and input tremendously. I sincerely and deeply hope that we’ll all be here doing this again for our mutual pleasure come next January. Long live Idol and may the best David win.
