A Sharp, a Flat and Holy Freaking Pimpage Batman: The Finale

#449 - 1--Jlynne--A Sharp, a Flat and Holy Freaking Pimpage Batman: The Finale--2008-05-20 21:48:11

#Which David won the night for being absolutely pimped like crazy by the judges?  At the end of the day BOTH Davids deserve to be pimped like crazy, because both are extremely talented, however one David has incredible range as a vocalist and performer, and one David can only sing ballads.  However, one David stole the night, and it might not be the David you expect.
- With an unprecedented hilarious start, it was nice to see American Idol change things up a bit.  They are ready to surprise us and get their viewer-ship back up.  I loved the boxing beginning, and laughed out loud at David A “weighing barely 100 pounds soaking wet.”  Big David and Little David are ready to bring it ala Ruben and Clay.  Two men, with one name and one desire, this is the most exciting finale since....since....ever?  Neither of them have been in the bottom three.  This finale REALLY is unprecedented.

I know I am personally way more excited about this finale than, Jordin/Blake, Taylor/Kat, Carrie/Bo, or Fantasia/Diana.  Of course, those finales COULD have been: Melinda/Jordin, Chris/Elliott, and Fantasia/LaToya.  (Carrie and Bo definitely deserved their slots.)  Anyway, this David/David showdown has really got me amped, which is hard to do.  I have to add too, that the two of them have adorably funny stage chemistry together, and you should check out some of the IdolExtra videos. Bring on the performances!

A lot of times, the finale doesn’t just come down to fervent fan base.  By this time, both finalists have pretty fervent fans.  David Cook and David Archuleta have intense fans!  Cook’s raised 25,000 dollars for his brothers!  The Cookies don’t play.  What finale night comes down to, is the casual vote.  One David definitely one the hearts of the casual vote tonight.  Was the other David hoping to come in second?

CLIVE DAVID SONG CHOICE:

DAVID COOK:

(1) “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For”
One of Clive’s best song choices to date, well since he had Diana sing “Don’t Cry Out Loud” anyway.  This was a great way to start the show.
Vocal: Not his absolute best or most exciting, but definitely amazing.  It was really nice to hear him sing some U2, and I really enjoyed pretty much everything about it.  I think he’s got some surprises for us later.
Performance: Casual and cool, David makes me feel like I am at his concert, and I really can’t wait until I really am!
Verdict: 8/10

DAVID ARCHULETA:

(1) Don’t Let the Sun Go Down On Me”
This song is already dangerous, because we have Justin Guarini, Clay Aiken, and Bo Bice comparisons.
Vocal: Midway through he began to sound really drowned out by the music.  The bigger stage and audience makes him and his voice seem a lot smaller.  The higher jump at the end was a little scary.  Hmmm....
Performance: Their giving them the lyrics, did you catch that?  Last time I caught view of the lyrics being given was season 5, I think they do that for all the finales.  I thought it was a normal, heartfelt David A performance.  It did not get me as excited as the judges got.  Holy freaking pimpage of David Archuleta.  Geez.
Verdict: 7/10

SONGWRITER CHOICES:

DAVID COOK:
(2) “Reach out for Something More”
This will definitely be the most rocking Idol single EVER.  The funny thing is, if David Archuleta tried to sing this song it would be a holy disaster, because it has a tempo faster than Andantino.
Vocal: This was fun, rocking, and Randy was right he WAS singing his face off.  It was in a high key, and he held on to that last note.  I’m excited to have a final single that isn’t crappy, freaking, ridiculous shmaltz.  Go David!!!
Performance: I really like the song and his performance.  I think it’s catchy and he could get radio play out of this.  I love him with a guitar rocking out.  This is good stuff.
Verdict: 9/10

DAVID ARCHULETA:
(2) “This Moment”
I know he is NOT talking about “this moment.”  Ugh, I hate songs like this. I don’t agree that he picked the better song.  Does better mean, shmaltzier and most annoying?
Vocal: This was really an outstanding vocal.  He really brought it back from the last vocal, which I found really mediocre.  The vocals had a nice build and the song structure, was a bit more in form than David Cook’s pick.
Performance: This is the kind of performance that Idol longs for.  The young kid singing his heart out to very obnoxious lyrics.  I’ll even admit, that it was special.
Verdict: 10/10

CONTESTANTS CHOICE:

DAVID COOK:
(3) “The World I Know”
This is what was leaked for him to sing last week, but he sang the crappy Switchfoot song.  I like this song much better. And THANK YOU for picking a new song Cook, good on you!!!
Vocal: I loved his tone on this, it was haunting and sexy. There was a lovely falsetto jump.  Oh, and another lovely falsetto jump at the end.  This was a really well done song, and his vocals are just transcendent.  I love his voice.
Performance: I loved the little smile he gave and how sincere this performance was. According to Paula, he’s standing in his truth.
Verdict: 10/10

DAVID ARCHULETA:
I wish he would have picked something new, but what can you do. I knew he wouldn’t.
(3) “Imagine”
Vocal: That was an incredible vocal.  This kid is REALLY in it to win it.  I adored so many of the runs.  The last note was beautiful, the runs were gorgeous.  I don’t agree with Randy that his voice is better than David Cook’s, because at the end of the day Cook’s range trumps the hell out of David.  Their voices are so different.  Aside from that, Archuleta brought the house down with this.
Performance: Heartfelt, honest and sincere.
Verdict: 10/10

THE TOTALS:
David Cook: 27/30
David Archuleta: 27/30

Though for me they tie, I think for the viewers just tuning in, David Archuleta really stole the casual vote.  Ending with “Imagine” gave him a magical moment at exactly the right time.  Simon’s right, to win David Cook probably should have whipped out “Always Be My Baby,” but that’s not his style.  That’s what makes him David Cook, he’s not in it to win Idol specifically, he’s in it to win it for the long career ahead of him.

I’ll be happy either way tomorrow.  May the best David win, which at the end of the day means either David.
