He Said, She Said: Top 11 Country crooners sing….odd song choices.

#461 - 4--ed--He Said, She Said: Top 11 Country crooners sing….odd song choices.--2008-06-17 11:05:43

#I was not as impressed as last week but let’s see how Juliet79 feels.
- Back by popular demand, it’s He Said, She Said. Well actually, nobody demanded it but we thought after 3 years we’d try it again. And I’m not quite sure how they are doing this tonight. It is it seems, by implication, the performances are in order of most votes to least and to that end there is a show ending surprise.  Juliet, ladies first.

She Said: Laura & SophieRockin’ with the Rhythm of the Rain” – To borrow a phrase from Randy Jackson (wrong show, I know), this was just alright for me.  I felt like one of the girls (I can’t tell them apart) sang louder than the other, and the showmanship was lacking.  They’ll need to work on that.  And what was with the weird tie-dye outfits?  I totally agree with John Rich that Laura & Sophie need to pick songs that are more age-appropriate and that they can really connect with.  Still, their performance wasn’t bad, the harmonies were nice.  Overall, I think they’re good enough to be back next week.

He Said: Laura & Sophie are one of my favorites and tonight they did not disappoint again. It’s too bad these two never went to the Diana DeGarmo School of performing or they’d win hands down. Again their harmonies are spot on and the song choice is a change up from last week. The fact that these two are so young, I have to agree with Jewel. When they have to sing songs they don’t know I wonder how they will hold up. But for tonight ……Grade A

She Said: Ashlee Hewitt “Ring of Fire” – I don’t thing I’ve ever heard a girl perform this song before.  Interesting.  There’s something very sweet and likeable about Ashlee.  I thought she connected with the audience well, and it was a nice performance.  My only problem is that sometimes she sounds like she’s holding her nose shut while she sings.

He Said: Ashley might be the cutest one on this show. But like last week I was not feeling this too much. There is a unique voice in there but is it unique-good? As Simon would say “I wasn’t jumpin’ out my chair” but it was pretty good but I’m afraid she looks better than she sings. Grade B-

She Said: Justin Gaston “Hello, Delilah” – Justin is the Ace Young of Nashville Star – a nice guy who looks amazing and sings just fairly well.  I didn’t think the vocals were anything special tonight.  I wonder if his looks are going to work for him or against him?  Also, this is not a country song he’s singing… and didn’t he sing “Drops of Jupiter” last week?  That’s not a country song, either.  Does Justin want to be a country star?
(Side note:  Man, are they pimping out Jewel’s new album, or what???)

He Said: If this guy didn’t look like h does he’d already be gone. And in case none of you have ever seen me I look just like him but sing better. Just kidding on both accounts there. But this was for me hands down the worst of the night and the judges were way too kind to him. This reminded me of a junior high talent show. Bad ,bad, bad.  He may be used to being in front of cameras but it’s the still kind and he is not at home at all in front of the TV kind. Off key almost all the time and I was uncomfortable watching this. Grade D-

She Said: Alyson Gilbert “I’ll Be Watching You” – Is Alyson still on this show?  I thought she was one of the weakest last week.  However, her singing tonight was very impressive; I’m pleasantly surprised!  I was still scared that she was going to go back to the bug-eyed thing from last week… but she didn’t.  This was a much better performance than Brook White did on this same song on American Idol.  Way to turn things around, Alyson!

He Said: Sticking to the Country jargon, that was a sight better than last week. Much less pageanty and a lot more in tune. But she will have to conquer the nerves. I think the fact she went after the beautiful disaster may have helped mine, the judges and the audience opinion. I do like her bold choice of song. Hard to hide behind that. Grade B-

She Said: Pearl Heart “Who Says You Can’t Go Home” – Pearl Heart is a group of sisters and I like them because they remind me of when my sisters and I all lived at home and used to sing together just for fun. J  Their song got off to weird start, but pretty soon the AMAZING harmonies kicked in and really sold the song.  I think the front girl still has a ways to go in learning to be a good lead.  She was better than last week, and showed more confidence, but she still looks uncomfortable and needs to incorporate some better dance moves.

He Said: Love these girls too. I think this was even better than last week. The front girl continues to show her lack of experience but this group is great. It will be very interesting to she her come out of her shell throughout the competition. I think it will happen. Here is another one who could use a class or two in the Diana DeGarmo School of performing. Grade A

She Said: Tommy Stanley “Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy” – Yikes, that’s pretty bold of him to choose a John Rich song.  I got a little dizzy during this performance, but I think that was because of the poor camera job.  Tommy’s performance was a little frenetic, but in a way it fit the song.  I thought the vocal was strong.

He Said: Another great improvement over last week for me. I actually liked this. I still don’t dig his voice but his performance woke me up. He kind of reminds me of Elliott Yamin. The vocals were on point and he showed he wants to hang around. Grade B-

She Said: Gabe GarciaHave You Ever Seen the Rain” – I loved Gabe last week, and am excited to hear him again this week.  I’m not familiar with the song and didn’t particularly like it – but what a beautiful, perfect vocal!  I just love his voice... I think I’d enjoy him singing just about any song.  He’s a country boy through & through.  John Rich has a good point, though, that Gabe should play to the camera a little more.

He Said: I really like this guy. This is the kind of guy who could be a success after the show as well. I know and I know John Rich wants a Hispanic Country guy. He gave Julio Iglesies the win on “Gone Country” over a vastly superior, Diana DeGarmo. I’m not just saying that because I like her. Listen Here and see. Gabe is way better than Julio was. I found myself singing along with him. I liked it. Grade B+

She Said: Shawn Mayer “He Stopped Loving Her Today” – This wasn’t the best song choice.  And the end fell off.  Other than that, I thought it was a pretty good performance, with a beautifully tender vocal.  I liked it better than the judges.

He Said: Another improvement over last week if not by much. I do think there is a good singer in there but like many contestants in this competition the nerves are getting the best of her. I did feel like I got to know her better this week. I’m not sure if that helps or hurts. Grade C+

She Said: Coffey “Waiting on the World to Change” – Okay, this isn’t a country song, and it’s not even a country arrangement.  There are so many great contemporary country songs, and I really wish Coffee had picked one of those.  Man, this performance is very bland.  I want to like Coffey, but I’m honestly bored.

He Said: Last week I thought he was mediocre at best. This week he was sub mediocre at best and I think he is in danger. Not only was I bored I wanted it to end so we could hurry and get to Melissa. I see why he never got past Hollywood on American Idol. He does have a great presence but this isn’t a presence contest. My son roamed throught the room when Coffey was singing and screeched “He’s ruining my John Mayer”. For once I agree with my son. Grade D-

She Said: Melissa Lawson “Natural Woman” – Yikes, I thought Melissa gave the best performance last week, and I can’t believe she’s in the bottom 2.  It seemed like she was a bit nervous tonight, but who can blame her?  Still, I thought she did great tonight!  I think she’s my favorite so far.

He Said: Now this is where weirdness abounds and why I thought the singing order was determined by vote totals. When they said Melissa and 3rd Town got the fewest votes I was like “What?!” Third Town I get. Melissa…No. Not only was she the best last week she went in the pimp spot and no one ever gets buzzed in the pimp spot. You whacky Country voters. This vote I’m afraid took all that confidence she had last week and canned it. She was not the Melissa we saw last week tearing it up. Still pretty good but not nearly as good as last week. Hard song to sing, especially when you are so shook up. Melissa still held her own and was good enough to hang in there. Grade A-

She Said: Third Town “Play Me Some Mountain Music” – Were they seriously thinking of “Bohemian Rhapsody”?  Wow – good thing they changed their mind.  The harmonies are pretty good, but it’s still coming off as kinda average and karaoke.  I don’t get them.  I can’t imagine hearing them on country radio; they seem more like a throwback to a barbershop quartet.

He Said: I didn’t like these guys last week and liked them less this week. That “lead” singer needs to take some testosterone. Trying to play to the audience with their song choice didn’t cut it for me. Third Town was 3rd rate this week. They did deserve their bottom 2 appearance and their trip home. Grade D+

She thought:  Again, I was shocked to see Melissa in the Bottom Two and I hope America doesn’t let that happen again.  However, in the end, America made the right choice.  Third Town & Alyson were the weakest last week.  Alyson made great strides and proved that she’s better than her performance last week.  Third Town didn’t.  My prediction for bottom 2 next week:  Shawn Mayer & Coffey.  Justin Gaston could also be here, but I’m betting the cute factor will keep him around for a few more weeks.

He Thought: What are the producers thinking having the last two sing for their life for next week when they are worried that they might be going this week. If you think about it this is kind of unfair to the bottom two contestants or at least the one who stays. Those Whacky Nashville Star producers. I’m thinking this will change next week. My favorites tonight were the girl groups followed by Gabe. The weakest tonight, and it ain’t even close, Preston and Coffey. I think the girls will keep Mr. Eye Candy in and Coffey will get to go home to his very cute daughter.

Next week they will be singing Pop songs. I wonder when they will have a Country night.

Is it Monday yet? Yee Haw!
