He Said, She Said: Pop goes the…..Country.
#464 - 4--ed--He Said, She Said: Pop goes the…..Country.--2008-06-24 01:04:40
#Tonight we find out if Pop can sound Country. And if it can who can make it sound the best.
- Another format change tonight. I actually like it although Juliet ain’t so on board with it. I like to hear what the contestants have to say after they get off stage. This gives us a lot more chance to get to know the contestants.
For me it was the best of all the weeks so far. And the right one went home for sure but I’ll have a little to say about that later. But now let’s check out the performances.
She said: Gabe Garcia – What a way to start the night! This was another solid performance from Gabe. I love Gabe’s voice, and he reminds me of George Strait. I felt like Gabe was still a bit tense, but he seemed more confident than last week. Overall, awesome!
He said: I have my suspicions that Gabe will win this thing. He has that thing. That Country thing and he showed it to us again tonight. Very good and very Country. He did seem to loosen up a bit more and I feel that each week, and there will be a lot of them for him, he will get more and more comfortable. Gabe is certainly a top contender and how can you not like this guy. I know John Rich and the Country voters have got to be eating this up.
Grade A
She said: Pearl Heart – These girls are so cute! Performance-wise, I thought this was much better than last week. The lead singer seemed more at-ease and the movements were more natural. However, I didn’t care much for the song choice.
He said: I love Pearl Heart and this was very good indeed. These girls may have been singing a long time together as sisters but the stiffness still abides in their soul. They are so beautiful and sound so great. I don’t know if this was the greatest song for them to Countryfy but I liked it. Those family harmonies are hard to beat.
Grade A-
She said: Alyson Gilbert– Alyson looked beautiful tonight and she seems so likeable, too! I’m pulling for her… however the singing was not great. The whole thing sounded a little flat, and the song choice didn’t engage the audience at all. I would have liked to hear her try a country version of Kelly Clarkson’s “Beautiful Disaster”.
He said: Of all the people on this show, other than maybe Gabe, Alyson looks like a Country star. Unfortunately, she does not sound like one. This song was not done well even for a Pop tune much less a Country one. Every time out Alyson has serious pitch issues and this was no exception. She looks the part but does not sound it, much like someone else who is packing bags tonight.
Grade C-
She said: Ashlee Hewitt – I enjoyed Ashlee more this week than I did last week. This was one of the toughest song choices of the night, and I thought she gave it a strong effort. At the end of the day, though, I still didn’t think this quite worked as a country song.
He said: Ashlee did everything right tonight. Right song, done right. And I’m not sure but I don’t think they get to pick the songs they sing. Very good Country rendition. She looked very cute and for me this was her best so far. You just can’t help but root for her. Should she continue to improve along this path, she could be with us til the end.
Grade A-
She said: Coffey – Aww, Coffey is so cute about his daughter! But… there was nothing at all country about this performances (or any of Coffey’s previous performances, for that matter). To me, it was just like karaoke at a party. Nothing special.
He said: Coffey some how escaped the dreaded bottom 2. How wrong was that? Last week’s song was really sucky. This week’s was a carbon copy. Instead of Contryfying “Umbrella” he karaoked it. I think that’s the worst. I didn’t like this at all. He had better keep showing that cute little daughter of his if he want d to stay in this competition because his singing isn’t. In fact I can’t figure out how he made it to Hollywood on Idol this year.
Grade D-
She said: Laura & Sophie – This was fun! I actually think this was their best performance yet, and they really engaged the audience well. The outfits were a little over the top, but they clearly are having a blast.
He said: I’ll go ahead and say it. These two are my favorites of the competition and had my favorite performance of the night. I love what they did with this Michael Jackson tune. I liked it much better than MJ’s version. They are so in tune with the song and each other. Ands in tune period. I, like the judges, loved the way they sang separate as well as harmonized. Since I DVR everything I watch I went back immediately and watched this again. If these girls were 21 and 20, they’d already be signed.
Grade A+
She said: Shawn Meyer– Wow, Shawn is always way out there on the edge, isn’t she? This was very tough, but Shawn pulled it off. I liked it! It’s interesting how she seems so confident and in-control during her song, but then she’s all teary and vulnerable afterwards. I’m still not quite sure who she is.
He said: I’m not sure how I felt about this. She certainly is confident. I will say I liked it better than her last two performances. But nothing I will get excited enough about to pick up the phone over.
Grade C
She said: Melissa Lawson– Yikes, I really hate this song… but I loved Melissa singing it! She is awesome and I can’t wait to buy her cd.
He said: I, like Juliet, can’t stand this song. And for the second time in this competition Melissa makes me actually like a song I can’t stand. That means she is something really special. And if the voters get their push button digits in gear we won’t have to watch her have another sub par performance like she had last week. This was really incredible and even though I like Laura & Sophie best, I can not deny that Melissa is the best singer in this competition. And did she say she lost 67 lbs? Well that’s great but don’t stop there. Like it or not losing a few more pounds will make the fans like her better, make her health better, and most of all she will like herself better and that will translate into even, if it’s possible, better performances. Great job!
Grade A +
She said: Justin Gaston– I don’t think a guy needs to be singing this song. I knew this would be a train wreck before it even started… and it was. From the pajama party dancers to the vocal snafus, I hated it. I’m not sure what the judges were hearing, because I thought it sucked. There’s nothing country about Justin, and he just comes off kinda phony in this forum.
He said: Since I am not a fan of either one of these last two guys, I almost fast forwarded through both performances. I didn’t. I should have. While I will agree with the judges this was his best, it still was no good. I will say though if he had any kind of decent voice and stage presence, he would be the only guy anybody would be talking about in Country music. He has looks that make women’s knees weak and men envious.
Grade C-
She said: Tommy Stanley– Yet another odd song choice for tonight. However, I thought Tommy sang this surprisingly well. It wasn’t all that country, but still I thought the judges were too hard on him.
He said: The only thing about this performance that was Country was it was on a Country music show. I was not a maniac about this at all. He is either very comfortable on stage or just hyperactive and that for me is the most entertaining part about him. I suspect he will be a bottom feeder again next week. The thing is, you can try to fake being a pop or Rock act but not Country if you are counting on the fans of Country to keep you in. . Country music fans like their Country, Country. Tommy will be cut no slack. You can bet he will be in the bottom 2 next week.
Grade C- She thought: Why do they have two hosts on Nashville Star? I wish they’d drop the female host and let Billy Ray do all the interviews with the contestants, like Ryan does on American Idol. But anyway, this was an interesting show tonight, and several of the contestants really raised their game. I’m still looking forward to a real “Country” week since we haven’t had one yet.
He Thought: The right one left tonight and I have this feeling the right on will leave next week. I think Coffey and Tommy will be in the bottom and even though Tommy didn’t get Country he’ll live to sing another week.
Coffey should be going home to his
daughter.
It’s amazing how affected these singers are when they know that they are in the bottom 2 and try to get up and sing. Last week Melissa was noticeably shaken and her performance showed it. She was worlds better when she knew she was safe. I think Tommy was very affected by his knowledge of his placement.
I’m not sure when it will be but there will be a week the contestants will sing one of their original songs. This I can’t wait to hear. As much As I liked this week, that week will be the one that separates the real from the karaoke.
Great night and let’s keep it up.
Is it Monday yet?
