He Sad, She Said: Two go and Oh NO!

#466 - 4--ed--He Sad, She Said: Two go and Oh NO!--2008-07-07 23:58:12

#When you let the public vote anything can happen and tonight it did. - I’ve been watching this show from the first night, and for the first time I feel rooked. Everyone got back to one song and they shortened the show by one hour. Last week was just an eh week for me. No one really blew me away. This week was much better in that sense but much worse in the elimination sense. An if I’m being honest, I don’t think even Melissa would have done that well on Idol this year and she IS the best singer in this competition. But on with the show, ladies first.

She Said: Melissa – “Danny’s Song”.  Tommy and Melissa were pulled out of the group right at the beginning to learn that one of them had the highest number of votes last week, and the other had the lowest.  Thankfully, Melissa (my favorite) is safe and Tommy is going home.  It’s kinda sad though, because Tommy is such a nice guy.  It’s weird that Tommy received fewer votes last week than Coffey.  But on to Melissa… she is fabulous no matter what she sings.  This wasn’t my favorite of her performances, but it was still great and the note at the end was nice.  Great way to start the show!

He Said: Pulling out two and telling us one got the most votes and one is going home is a good way to try it out. But you tell me, did you have any doubt who was going and who was staying? Singing one of my all time favorite Anne Murray tunes, Melissa sounds downright good. Not great but good. I liked the vocal jump she did and most importantly she stayed in tune all the way. Grade A

She Said: Laura & Sophie -- “Walking After Midnight”.  Yikes, that clip from their mentoring session makes them seem super immature.  But apparently they’re back to being best friends – so it’s all good, I guess.  This performance was just okay for me, and the last note was painfully out of tune.  It’s nowhere near as good as Kellie Pickler did on this song on American Idol.

He Said: This was miles better than last week and I think I liked it better than anyone else. The harmonies were really good and they seemed to mesh well this week. That’s the good stuff. Now the bad. I 100% agree with John and Jewel. While there is something there, something really good, they are just way to, not young, but immature to do this right now. They are just not ready now. I wish they would have waited maybe 4-5 years to try this but hey, this looks like the last season of Star. But there will be more seasons of “Can You Duet”. This is where they should ply their craft later on. And I will almost guarantee they will be gone next week. Did you see Sophie roll her eyes when Jewel made her comment about them going instead of Pearl Heart? Grade: Singing B: Attitude F

She Said: Gabe – “Somebody Like You” – Yay, a Keith Urban song!  I love it how Gabe made this song his own, rather than doing a carbon copy of the popular original.  Gabe looked much more comfortable on stage this week, and really had fun with it.  I really liked it!  Awesome vocal, as always.  Gabe may have been even stronger than Melissa tonight… those two are head and shoulder above the rest.

He Said: Looks like Juliet and I are on the same page tonight. Gabe was really good. I can actually see him winning. This was all in tune and he is learning to grab the audience a bit more. I think it might be his best to date. Grade A

She Said: Shawn – “First Cut Is the Deepest” – Wow, Shawn couldn’t handle the constant criticism from John Rich, so she switched mentors and is now working with Jeffrey instead.  I didn’t know that was allowed.  Still, I can’t say that I blame her for wanting to switch.  As for this performance, it was a little boring, but pretty good overall.  Shawn has a very intimate tone, and she’s lovely.  However she comes across very depressed and I always end up feeling sad for her.  It’s hard to really be excited about her.

He Said: Again Juliet and I are on the same page. I find it very difficult to get on board with Shawn. And if she can’t take the heat, get out of the kitchen. It’s going to be a lot rougher than John Rich in the real world. That being said she surely looks like a Country star even if she can’t pull off the singing part. Tonight was pretty good and I ain’t jumpin’ out my chair. Sometimes are better than others but she needs to be great every time out. I wouldn’t be surprised to see her bottom feeding next week. Grade B-

She Said: Coffey – “Proud Mary” – Umm, hello, this is a COUNTRY show.  So pick a country song!  And why is Coffey safe again this week, anyway?  This sucks.  Ashlee or Pearl Heart is going home instead.  I really didn’t like Coffey’s performance.  I thought it was over the top, bordering on frenetic, and it’s just ridiculous trying to make this work as a country song.

He Said: Holy crap! This poser made it leaving Pearl Heart and Ashlee to suffer. But so few people are watching this show some one like VFTW can actually have an impact. Luckily, even they aren’t watching. As for tonight’s mess, it’s another one. Coffey could possibly go home after this one and you know why. Of course it was bad but his ace in the hole was a no show tonight; his daughter. It is a shame he wasn’t sent packing tonight. Not once has he impressed me.  And the last two weeks have been the most unimpressive. Grade D

She Said:  Ashlee “Take the Money and Run” – Ashlee is really cute, that’s for sure.  This was definitely her most fun performance so far.  I liked it!  She should definitely not be in the bottom 2 at this point… but then neither should Pearl Heart.

He Said: So here we are with the bottom 2 and neither deserves it. I think this could be my favorite Ashlee moment. She showed a little more of herself tonight. Even though it looked a tad forced it was still miles better than what we just finished listening to. Ashlee does have the look that could break men’s hearts and the voice is not too far behind. Grade B-

She Said:  Pearl Heart “Ain’t Goin’ Down ‘til the Sun Comes Up” – This Garth Brooks favorite is a crowd-pleaser and Pearl Heart did not disappoint.  This was without a doubt their best performance of the season!  They have improved so much, and the lead singer especially is looking so much more confident.

He Said: This was the best performance of the night. I loved this. It was in sync and in tune and in the pocket. Without question their best of the season. It was so good fro me I went back and watched it a couple more times. I too will but their CD when it comes out. They looked great and seemed so comfortable. I might add this is the first time ever that the bottom two sang without the look of desperation. In fact they both sang their best. Grade A+

She Thought:  I can’t believe that it’s Pearl Heart that is sent packing tonight, along with Tommy.  Other than the frontrunners (Melissa and Gabe) I would have rather lost just about any other contestant rather than Pearl Heart.  I don’t think they deserve to go yet, and it’s sad.  I really hope we haven’t seen the last of them.  If these girls put out an album, I’ll certainly buy it.  What a sad ending to tonight’s show!  Oh well, it must go on… and Billy Ray tells us that 2 more contestants will be leaving next week.   Wow!  I’m going to predict Laura & Sophie, and Coffey.  But maybe that’s just wishful thinking, since apparently Coffey sticks around no matter what.  So maybe it will be Shawn to leave instead.  We’ll find out next Monday!

He Thought: How is Coffey still in this thing and Pearl Heart is packing bags? Well I think Jeffrey will make something out of Pearl Heart if he follows through on his promise. It is a shame we will not get to hear them anymore this season and we will have to endure another week of Coffey. Like my compadre I would rather have lost any other contestant with the exception of Melissa and Gabe than Pearl Heart. I have a feeling we have not seen or heard the last of them. I am at least glad we did get to hear them this one last time. I would like to have them on Your New Tuens.com.

Just one thing more to say; Sophie, Laura, and Coffey get an early start on packing.

Is it Monday yet?
