He Said, She Said: The eyes have it. The eye rolls don’t.
#468 - 4--ed--He Said, She Said: The eyes have it. The eye rolls don’t.--2008-07-15 00:06:00
#Tonight, the host was the worst on the show. But hey, that’s every night. - We lost the right one(s) tonight and all reality TV contestants need to take note. When I was at the American Idol auditions this year, the director for the Idol shoot told the crowd “Be careful what you are doing at all times because you never know when the camera is on you”. He was right wasn’t he Sophie? I honestly think that is why they were cut this week, not because of their singing. I still find myself humming “Pretty Young Thing”.
Was tonight’s show good enough to make me want to go out and buy some CDs? No. Sorry. But as this show goes it was good. And I think John Rich was pointing some fingers tonight at NBC for picking the contestants. Hmmmm, I though that was the judges call. I will have to say, I don’t think ANY of the contestants on Nashville Star this season would have made it past Hollywood. In fact, one didn’t; Coffey. And for some unbeknownst reason to me he still sings. I will have to say I have only watched this season in its entirety. I did catch a few shows when Erica Jo won. But the fact is, Season one is the only one to produce any legitimate stars. And 3
rd place finisher Miranda Lambert is by far the most successful. I don’t feel anyone who wins this season will change that at all. In fact a show watched by less people that Star “Can You Duet” found what I think could be the next great singer period in Caitlin Lynn, the far superior half of the winning duet. Check her out
"Like We Never Loved At All" I do think that there is a slight possibility that Gabe and Melissa can do something. Here goes my political incorrectness “but”. Gabe has the legit Country voice but believe me, there are many more with much more and can write great tunes. His ethnicity is his biggest Ace in the hole. Melissa has to lose a lot more weight. She has some amazing eyes with a great smile and is the only real potential vocal star. She sings songs that are so easy to go off key yet, despite some of the judges comments in past weeks, she never goes off pitch. Melissa is the only real threat to be a Country star on this show right now. I certainly hope she succeeds. I’d buy her CDs. But enough of my soap box and on with the show.
She Said: Ashlee –
“Cowboy, Take Me Away”. I don’t love this song (I’m not a big Dixie Chicks fan), but Ashlee did a great job on this performance. It was very genuine and convincing, and she seemed much more at ease this week. She looked great, too! Ashlee is definitely growing on me… I think this was her best so far.
He Said: Ditto. I do think Ashlee has the look of the loveable Country music singer.
Grade B
She Said:
Gabe –
“Must Be Doing Something Right”. Gabe is refreshing because he is so thoroughly country and gives consistently good performances week after week. This was another excellent performance, and I liked the little falsetto thing toward the end; it was a nice twist from Billy Currington’s original. Gabe very well might win this thing.
He Said: Gabe is subtle enough to draw us in and he did have that vocal tonight. He is very likable doing this song. I like his subdued confidence tonight as well.
Grade A
She Said: Coffey –
“It’s Your Love”. We’re seeing a very different Coffey tonight. It’s nice that this song means so much to him; it brought out a very genuine vibe we haven’t seen before. However the nerves and emotions really got the better of him throughout this performance – vocally it was really not that good.
He Said: My first question is, Why the hell is he singing before Melissa and second; Why the hell is he still singing at all. I hate it when anyone pulls the heart strings to get votes. I didn’t buy it at all tonight. Sorry. And you know what I bought even less? The singing. Really, he should be gone next week. This was awful.
Grade D-
She Said: Melissa –
“My Baby Loves Me”. Melissa definitely picked the right song with this Martina favorite! She rocked it out and had fun with it. The audience was totally into it and so was I. I think the judges were way too hard on her. Duh, she wasn’t trying to do a carbon copy of the original. I liked how she switched it up and made it more of a rocker. She’s got a great personality, too.
He Said: As usual, Melissa shows everyone else just how to tear one up. I disagree with all the judges to some degree. Had Gretchen Wilson come out there and done the same thing I don’t think they would have called that over the top. I think Melissa did what she was asked to do and for me did it well. An again she hit every note.
Grade A
She Said: Laura & Sophie –
“Picture to Burn”. First of all, I’m glad John Rich called them out about the eye roll thing from last week. As to the performance, I had mixed feelings about this song choice – it was a good choice in that it’s a fun song and very age-appropriate, but it was a bad song choice in that Taylor Swift is huge on the Country scene right now, and frankly far better than Laura & Sophie. The comparison doesn’t help them. Tonight their vocals weren’t great, and I didn’t like the harmonies. This wasn’t recording artist caliber, that’s for sure. They did seem to perform with more confidence, though. It seems like all three judges are just done with Laura & Sophie, and honestly so am I.
He Said: The eyes have it. The eye rolls don’t. Tonight the duo was just average and I think they saw the writing on the wall. I’m pretty much doing the ditto thing again with Juliet.
Grade C
She Said: Shawn –
“Before He Cheats”. I was really nervous for Shawn with this song choice. This was a #1 hit for Carrie Underwood, and I just don’t think anyone else can sing this nearly as well as the original. However, I was pleasantly surprised with Shawn’s performance tonight. The vocal was pretty solid and she performed it well. It was probably her best performance so far this season. That nice comment from John Rich had to feel good.
He Said: Anytime anyone but Carrie, and even Carrie live, sings this, it is a very high risk. This is a song for the studio. In fact I have pretty much hated every version I heard outside the CD. I am giving props to Shawn for this version. She even changed it up a bit adding her name as the car wrecker. It was if she knew she was not the one to go. Great attitude if a little stiff. Vocally it was right on but I miss that kick ass high bridge Carrie does. This should put her in the top 4. Who would have thought that in the beginning>
Grade A-
She Thought: Didn’t they tell us that two contestants were going home this week? I’m confused that we’re only sending one home. I’m glad it’s Laura & Sophie, though, and I’m happy that Shawn gets to stay, because I liked her better tonight than ever before. In some ways this was my favorite week yet on Nashville Star because finally everybody actually sang country songs! Yay!
He Thought: Too bad we won’t be hearing the wonderful family harmonies from Pearl Heart anymore on this show. It’s not to bad we won’t be hearing the harmonies of Laura and Sophie. I do suspect when and if they mature, they can become something special.
As for me, nothing changed as far as I see the outcome. It should be Gabe and Melissa. And hey, wouldn’t it be cool to hear them do a full song in harmony?
Is it Monday yet?
