He Said, She Said: Original music is the best kind.

#469 - 4--ed--He Said, She Said: Original music is the best kind.--2008-07-22 19:45:12

#This should be the best night of all. They sing their original tunes. - This is the night I wish more than any other that we got to hear Pearl Heart wear one out instead of Coffey. I was really wondering if they were any good at writing as this could be the thing that makes or breaks their careers. You may or may not know Jamie O’Neal but she is an Australian songwriter that wanted to be a Country singer but made her name in songwriting first. She finally broke in and she is great. See her and Carrie sing together Here.  Anyway, if the songwriting is good enough it is a good way to make a break into the Country scene. Will it be good enough tonight? Let’s see.

She Said: Coffey “Southern Man” – It’s original song night on Nashville Star and once again I’m sad that it’s Coffey standing here instead of Pearl Heart.  Oh well.  This song was okay I guess.  The lyrics were the most country thing about it, and I wonder if it had different words if it would even sound like a country song at all.   Basically it sounded to me like a non-country artist trying to write a country song.  Which is actually exactly what it was.  Decent, but not on the same caliber as any of the others tonight.

He Said: I am no fan of Coffey. He should have been gone weeks ago. He is only a marginal singer at best. But I did like this tune. It wasn’t a vocally challenging but I loved the idea and his presentation. Should it be good enough to keep him in? I don’t think it matters. He may just win. Think how that will stick in the craw of John Rich. Ouch! Grade,Song: B+ Singing: D+

She Said:  Melissa “Ready to Stand” – Wow!  Now this is a winner’s song.  I love it!  My husband says it sounds like a hit song you’d hear on the radio right now.  Awesome, awesome!

He Said: Anyone who has watched just one episode of this show knows that Melissa is hands down the best singer in this competition. In fact I can’t recall her ever missing a note even on the almost impossible to sing and not screw up “True Colors”. And pretty much anytime she sings it’s a home run. I thought this was her best. I loved the song but she did not write the whole song. She had some help. But never less it sounded awesome and I would buy that track. And I think she lost even more weight.  Lookin’ Good! Grade, Song; A Singing: A+ What’s new?

She Said:  How cool is it that we get to see the judges perform?!  This was fun.  Although to be honest, I didn’t love Jewel’s singing at all.  I hadn’t realized that Jeffrey wrote Rascal Flatts’ hit “What Hurts the Most” – and he sings awesome, too!  I’m impressed.  John Rich is quite the showman as always.  My husband thinks it’s awesome that John is playing a flying V guitar, because he has one, too.  (I had to include that last comment so I wouldn’t be disowned. J)

He Said: Eh.

She Said: Gabe “Lost Weekend” – Another could-be radio hit!  The melody on the verses totally reminds me of that song “Where the Green Grass Grows”… Hmmm.  The chorus is totally different, though.  Anyway, this performance was really good, as we’ve come to expect from Gabe.  John Rich has a point that if Gabe has a weakness, it’s with audience connection.  Still, this was excellent.

He Said: Gabe is “The Other” great Country singer on this show right now. His song was the bomb. What a great story and he delivered it well on stage. In the studio I think it would be great. Grade, Song: A+  Singing; A-

She Said:  Ashlee “Mike’s Hard Lemonade” – We’re down to Ashlee and Shawn in the bottom two.  Shawn has probably been the weaker of the two over the course of the competition, but Ashlee sang early last week, which is always a disadvantage.  So it could go either way.  “Mike’s Hard Lemonade” is a good song, and the perfect vibe for Ashlee.  She’s talented, that’s for sure.  Not the best of the night, in my opinion, but very good and lots of fun.

He Said: I think this was Ashlee’s best. Was it good enough? I think so. She most certainly has the look and feel of a loveable Country star. The song was above average and she did it proud. I do not think she has near enough confidence but that will come. Grade, Song: B+ Singing: B

She Said:  Shawn “I’m Not Looking Back” – I think I finally “got” Shawn for the first time tonight.  Wow!  That was stunning.  I’m blown away.

He Said: Juliet may have gotten her but I’m still on the fence. She just seems like a bar singer and that’s all I get. She just does not have a distinctive enough voice to make it for me. I do think this was also her best. Of the two Ashlee should be hangin’ ‘round. Grade, Song: B- Singing B+

She Thought:  Everybody was totally impressive tonight, except for Coffey who (although clearly outmatched) wasn’t horrible either.  So it was a great show!  Who do you think is going to win this thing?  I’ve been pulling for Melissa but at this point honestly it could be any of them.  As long as it’s not Coffey, I’m okay with it.

He Thought: I am still wondering why Coffey is still here when the likes of Ashlee Hewitt and Pearl Heart and even Laura and Sophie are not. I’ll admit I am not the biggest fan of Ashlee but Coffey should have departed week one or two at the latest. As of now it is a two horse race between Gabe and Melissa as it has been from week one. But that may be a mute point. Coffey may just win. How rough would that be? Pretty rough I tell you.

I think next week will be the last chance to win. Tune in and see if we get a real winner or an American Idol reject.
