He Said, She Said: The final four pick up steam. Well, 3 do.

#470 - 4--ed--He Said, She Said: The final four pick up steam. Well, 3 do.--2008-07-29 00:31:56

#We got a final 3 tonight worthy of a final 3. I do wish Pearl Heart was still here but this will be good.
- Of all music genres only Country music is reaching out trying to gain fans from different genres which is why Country music is beginning to flourish again. I highly commend them for that. I am more and more becoming a Country music fan. And I am now sad that this is my first venture in to Nashville Star.

This final three are a very worthy final three. And for the first time, I am wholly looking forward to next week’s finale. I’m n ot sure what to expect but we will get to see my favorites, Pearl Heart, again. And tonight I finally got Shawn. What about that? Let’s see how the show went down. All I can say is I’m finally happy with the result.

She Said: Shawn Mayer – “Here for the Party” – This Gretchen Wilson song is a perfect song choice for Shawn!  I love that Shawn is such a fighter, and FINALLY it seems like she’s having fun, too.  Apparently Shawn has a “wisdom tooth issue” tonight, but I never would have guessed it from this performance.  Shawn has definitely blossomed with Jeffrey as her mentor.  Excellent!
“The Dance” – This Garth Brooks favorite is hauntingly beautiful, and Shawn really connected with the song and gave a lovely performance.  Wow, I can’t believe how much she has improved!  Is this the same Shawn as the pensive, depressed girl we saw several weeks back?  It’s so great to see her all lit up and excited!

He Said: I too felt Shawn had finally shed the last remaining insecurity. I think the trip home put her at ease. She now feels like she has already won and has nothing to lose. She was well in tune and carried just enough confidence to make this work. Grade A-

This song was her best for me. I finally get Shawn. This was marvelous and it looked like she was entirely comfortable being on that stage. Every note in tune and with conviction. I know on Idol we see some growth from contestants but that show is 15 weeks long. This one is roughly nine. I don’t know if the mentoring helps that much but Shawn has really matured as a performer and singer. Grade A+

She Said:  Gabe Garcia – “Five O’Clock Somewhere” – Another great song choice!  Gabe is solid classic country, and so is this song.  Why does Jewel have to question each contestant about whether or not they really want this career?  Duh, of course they do, or they wouldn’t be here.
“Living in Fast Forward” – Gabe is awesome because he can sing these huge 100% country songs by major stars, and he just pulls it off every time.  Here he is, singing Kenny Chesney, and there’s nothing pretentious about it at all.  Gabe is the real thing, that’s for sure.  Brilliantly sung, and his performance skills are really improving as well.  Jeffrey is right; Gabe has a great voice for radio.  I’m looking forward to seeing what happens for him in the future.

He Said: Every time Gabe steps on that stage it’s like he was born to be there. This was another in a long line of good performances from him. This song reminds me that a few weeks back Scott Kalitta was killed in a fiery crash in New Jersey. In memoriam of him other dragsters had patches that read “It’s 5’Oclock Somwhere”. I could only assume that was his saying. Grade A

His second song showed even more confidence and even more proof he will succeed in the booth as well as on the stage. If Gabe does win, I think he will be the most successful of the three left. Is he better? Maybe not but he is something Country music ids looking for. He will represent well. Grade A

She Said:  Coffey – “Sweet Home Alabama” – Really???  Okay, Coffey is a great guy, a devoted dad, and an enthusiastic performer.  However, this is a singing competition, and just like in previous weeks, vocally I am just not impressed.

He Said: Uh…..Double Ditto! At least this was his last performance.

She Said:  Melissa Lawson – Hmmm, I’m not familiar with this song, but I enjoyed this performance!  Spot-on vocal as always.
“Jesus, Take the Wheel” – Wow, Melissa is very brave to take on Carrie Underwood’s signature song.  But she really did a nice job with it and gave it her own twist.  I liked it!  Jeffrey is right that Gabe and Shawn have kinda caught up with Melissa, though… she is excellent, but it’s anyone’s game at this point.

He Said: As always Melissa sings it well. She is always dependable in the vocal department but sometimes it seems she tries too hard to put her own stamp and personality on her songs. This was definitely the case on this tune. But hey, she sang every note and right at that. Grade A

It is always very risky to sing Carrie and especially risky to sing “Jesus Take the Wheel”. Even Carrie has issues singing this live sometimes. In fact I have never heard anyone other than Carrie do this song any kind of justice……until tonight. This was by far the best I have heard this song sung outside Carrie. I think this was Melissa’s best. I am very impressed. I wanted to hear some more. Grade A+

She Thought:  Mercifully, America sends Coffey home tonight.  In my opinion, it’s several weeks too late, but he definitely gave it a good run.  I’m really glad the best 3 are making it to the finale though.  I’m hard-pressed to decide who to vote for tonight, as I’m really impressed with all three of them.  Can’t wait for the finale!

He Thought: My favorite show of this season for a couple reasons. The top three performed like the top 3. Not one of their tunes was below par. Why could this not have been the case all season long? It was as if all three realized they were where they wanted to be and relaxed. I do wish Pearl Heart was still here though. Where have you heard that before? The other reason is that Coffey finally went packing. Dude! How did you outlast Ashlee, Pearl Heart, and even Laura and Sophie. Well one thing is for sure next week should be a blast and I’m sittin’ here waitin’ fer it!

Is it Monday yet?
