Idolhead winner reviews the Philly show

#475 - 1--ed--Idolhead winner reviews the Philly show--2008-08-18 12:22:56

#Our winner if the Guess the Idols went to the show in Philly and here's his take - Hello, my name is George and I was the contest winner on idolheaded.com.   I won three seats in the seventh row, so I was very close and could see all the idols quite clearly.  The concert took place in Philadelphia which is where I have lived for three years now.  I am a huge idol fan, and my favorites include, ELLIOTT, Carrie, Kelly, Josh Gracin, and Jennifer Hudson.  Now onto the show…..

First up was Chikezie, His first song was “I Believe to My Soul” which he also sang on the show.  I thought he sounded great, although he didn’t have as much energy as I would have expected from him.  He also looks like he has gained some weight since the show ended.  He followed that song up with an Usher song “Caught Up” which was enjoyable, but nothing spectacular.  His last song I had never heard before, but I though he sounded sensational!! Really hit some amazing notes at the end of the song that were impressive, it gave me and my friends goosebumps. Looking up the set list, it was a song called “So High” by John Legend. Overall grade for Chikezie I would give him a solid B very nice way to start the show.

Next up was Ramiele, and she comes out with an upbeat number “I Want You Back,” by the Jackson Five.  I liked her on the show, but this was just not working for me!  She had minimal energy kind of sang it like a robot.  On the plus side she looks absolutely gorgeous.  Her next song was “Love Will Lead You Back,” by Taylor Dayne.  I do not like this song to begin with, and her rendition really is average.   She closes her portion with “If I Never See Your Face Again” by Maroon 5.   I can’t really remember what this sounded like; I think I may have blocked it out.  Overall was disappointed with Ramiele, I wish David H. could have been on the tour instead, or even one of the girls from the semifinals.  Overall grade for Ramiele is a F.

Ramiele mercifully gives way to Michael Johns, who opens up with a medley of “We Will Rock You/ We Are the Champions.”  I think he has talent, but these are just not the right songs for him.  He is not, nor will he ever be up to the caliber of Freddie Mercury.  If you are going to pull off a Queen song you need to be an awesome singer (Elliott) or have some performance skills or do something special with it (Kelli Pickler and Constantine).  His performance was average, with some really awkward movements that I think were maybe attempted dancing?  Next up for Michael is, “It’s All Wrong But It’s All Right” by Dolly Parton.  Now this was perfect! These are the types of songs he should be singing; his voice was spot on and gave me chills.  He closed his set with “Dream On,” which was the song that got him voted off.  I have to say I thought he did a good job with it, I was impressed. I will give him a solid B

Next up, is everybody’s favorite contestant to make fun of (including me) Kristy Lee Cook. I was not a fan of her on the show, but I have to say when she came out she looked amazing, like a superstar!  Finally the girl must have got a stylist.  She sounded nice on her first song, I have no idea what it was, something called “Squeeze the Love Outta You.”  She followed it up with “God Bless the USA,” and she did a killer rendition.  She knocked it out of the park, gave me goose bumps even.  I have to say, looks like she may well actually have a successful career who knew? (Other then Ed of course).    Her final song was “Cowgirls” by someone I never heard of.  She sounded good, but it was hard for me to enjoy it, as I was unfamiliar with her song.  Overall grade I will have to give her an A. She seems to have drastically improved since the show, keep up the hard work girl!

Now we have Carly Smithson, she starts off on stage with wind blowing her hair up singing “Bring Me to Life,” by Evanescence.  I think she looks scary personally and I though this was awful.  Amy Lee is one of, if not the best female rock singers out there, and I am sorry Carly but this song is just not for you.  She was screaming/shrieking at the top of her lungs, all it did was scare me and give me a headache.  She starts her next song out, “Crazy on You,” with no music at all just her pure voice.  She sounds amazing; this is more of the type of songs she should be singing.  The music comes in and she does a fantastic job with this song, best performance of the night thus far.  Her final song is a Cyndi Lauper song, “I Drove All Night.”   Again she sounds fantastic!  Her voice is amazing at points and she sang the song instead of shrieking.  If she can pick the correct songs to record she could be successful, but I hope she realizes what works and what doesn’t.  I would love to give her an A but because of the debacle of the first song Carly gets a B+.

Next up, we have my personal favorite Brooke.  She starts us off on the piano performing “Let It Be.”   She does a fantastic job, I love this song and I love her.  Her next song she does on the guitar and its “1234” by Feist.  This is not my favorite song by her, I think she does a lot better with songs on the piano.  Overall she is just so happy up there that it is hard not to like this, but I personally wish she had picked a different song.  Her closing song is “Yellow” by Coldplay. She does a good job with it, do not think it is better then the Coldplay version, but I definitely like this.  It is something different and she brings a unique vibe to the show. I would love to see her in a smaller venue; I think she would blow the roof off an intimate setting.   Brooke did a solid job and I give her an A.

They closed out the first half of the show with a group number by everyone who had just performed.  This is good, and I enjoy when they do group numbers.  I wish they had more of them actually. Although it seemed like they centered on Michael Johns a bit which was strange as he was not the best singer up there.  Then intermission   BLAHHHHH

The show returns from intermission with Jason Castro singing “Over the Rainbow.”  He has such a nice tone to his voice this was a bit too long maybe they should have shortened it some but was a good rendition.  Next up for Jason is Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy.”  I though that he did a fantastic job with this, and I hope he records this version!  He blew me and all my friends away; I love what he did with this song.  He closes out his set with “Daydream” by The Lovin’ Spoonful.  This is good as well, but I can’t help but wish he had done Hallelujah instead.  I wish he had another song BOO, definitely felt like his set was really short.  Great job by Jason I can’t wait to hear his CD.  My grade for Jason is A+.

Now we have Syesha, and she starts us off with “Umbrella.”  I do not like her hair or her outfit, but she does well with the song.  Not sure who this guy is singing it with her, they should have had another idol join her!  Overall I like this song and I like her version.  Next she goes with the Alicia Keys song “If I Ain’t Got You.”   She sounds fantastic, but this just is not an exciting concert song.  I think if this were a small venue maybe would have worked better, but she can definitely sing.  She closes things off with “Listen” from Dreamgirls.  Her performance is spectacular, it is obvious that the song means a great deal to her.  She knocks this one out of the park, putting everything she has into it.  She gave me chills multiple times and did a great great great job.  Again if she can find the correct songs for herself to record she will be successful.   I can’t help but feel a bit sorry for her though, as it is obvious the crowd just wants her off so David can take the stage.  Her voice also sounds scratchy as she is introducing David; I hope she is not wearing it out!  Overall grade for Syesha B+.

Next up is a whole bunch of screaming and David Archuleta.  He opens up on the piano singing “Angels.”  He does a fantastic job he sounds amazing on this, he really has a great voice.  One thing my friends notices is he has very long fingers(LOL).  Next up he sings “Apologize” by OneRepublic.  I personally do not like this song, but I thought again he sounds amazing, and better then the original.  Next he sings “Stand by Me/Beautiful Girls” and again sounds spectacular.  This boy was meant to sing, I hope he doesn’t go crazy like some other younger singers have!  He closes the set with “When You Say You Love Me,” by Josh Groban.  The song itself is kind of boring, I wish he had sung something else (like Imagine), but he does sound great.  There are some really amazing notes at the end of the song (which I am sure is why he picked it).   Good job David A, and with his first single already doing well, I am sure he will be a big star.  Overall Grade A+.

Finally, we have David Cook.  He opens with “Hello,” which I personally did not enjoy on the show and again just did not like here.  Sorry!  He sounds good, but this song just bored me.  Next up he sings “The Time of My Life” which is the crappy songwriting contest song.  Again boring song, but he sounds excellent.  Next he videotapes the crowd, so when his five minutes of fame are up he will have memories.  I thought this was fun.  I have to say this guy is pretty funny, my friend thinks he has an attitude, but I think he is just sarcastic.  Next up he sings “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing,” which again he sounds good, but again this is not an exciting song.  I wish he would have sung something else.  He next does “My Hero,” by the Foo Fighters.  This is decent; a lot of background stuff was going on. At one point the guitarist’s string breaks and that kind of throws things off. Also, some drunk 40 something year old woman flings her bra onstage and hits David……  He makes a joke about it after the song, but it was kind of odd.  He closes the set with “Billie Jean,” and he does a spectacular job on it.  Probably the best performance of the night and a great way to close the show!  Overall grade I want to give him an A, but I just did not enjoy this as much as some of the others so he gets a B+.

The show closes with one final group number, “Please Don’t Stop the Music.”  This is a fun way to close the show, although Michael Johns dancing is kind of odd.  He looks like a drunken guy at a wedding.  Overall I will say the concert was good. I have been to all the concerts except season 6.  I would say ranking the concerts from best to worst goes; Season 2, Season 5, Season 1, Season 7, Season 4, Season 3.   As you can see season 7 falls in the middle.

Is it season 8 yet?
